Ever since the first announcement of the Oculus Rift, virtual reality headsets have become a major new hardware topic in the racing community as the devices could easily render expensive three-screen setups obsolete.
Many sim racers have already taken the chance to grab the first Developer Kit version of the Oculus, even though it wasn’t officially intended to be used by retail customers. Those who have withstand the urge to buy one might get weak now as the second Developer Kit version of the Oculus Rift can now be pre-ordered!
Compared to the first version, the DK2 comes with a bumped up resolution thanks to a new OLED display that works in 1.920 x 1080 instead of 1.280 x 800 like the first developer version. The new kit also comes with integrated head tracking and a much sleeker design, edging closer to what will be the final product.
The DK2 can be pre-ordered now, selling for $350, units will start shipping in June. Officially, this product is still not intended to be used by regular customers but that will most likely not keep most people away, especially as Oculus Rift support is improving in many titles and the final version may not be available until 2015.
Meanwhile, Sony joins the VR game as well as the company’s Project Morpheus Playstation 4 VR headset prototype has recently been unveiled at the Game Developers Conference. Like the Oculus, Sony’s VR headset works in full 1080p resolution, includes head tracking and even 3D audio.
Sony’s VR headset won’t face competition with the Oculus though as the Morpheus will be confined to the Playstation 4 platform which is not supported by the Oculus Rift.
You can watch a small video of the new device below, showing a hands-on with the prototype.
Do you plan on getting a VR headset soon? Or are you even among those who already own an Oculus Rift development kit?
